Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco makes crowns and caps in a handful of sizes, and the repair approach depends on which one you have. The most common models we see on Hagerstown chimneys are the Famco FC series (standard residential caps with a built-in crown skirt) and the Famco CCK crown-to-cap kits that mount directly over an existing masonry crown. The FC series runs from 8×8 up to 13×13 flue tile dimensions, and the mounting skirt dictates how the repair is done, not just the cap size.

Signs Your Famco Crown Repair Is Failing

• Hairline cracks running across the crown surface. This is normal aging of masonry, but in Hagerstown’s freeze-thaw winters, water gets in those cracks, freezes, and widens them every year. Once the outside lip of the crown shears off, water routes directly into the brick below. The Famco cap is sitting there looking fine, but it’s no longer protecting anything.
• Damp brick or a musty smell in the attic near the chimney chase. By the time you smell it, the crown has been failing for a couple of seasons. A wet chase means water is getting behind the crown and reaching framing. In older Hagerstown homes near the Jonathan Street corridor, we’ve pulled back siding and found rotted sheathing where a cracked crown was the only visible symptom outside.
