Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Hagerstown Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Gelco-compatible chimney caps throughout Hagerstown, with most installations running between $285 and $640 depending on flue size and cap model. If the cap is still on the truck, Wendell can usually have it done the same visit as a sweep. Most owners discover the problem the hard way: a cap blown loose in a March windstorm, rust streaks down the chimney crown, or a squirrel that sounds like it’s rearranging furniture in the flue at three in the morning.

Gelco makes a solid cap. But like anything bolted to the top of a chimney in Washington County, it takes weather from every direction. When it fails, it fails in predictable ways, and we can tell you which road you’re looking at before the ladder even comes off the rack.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco chimney caps come in a few lines, and the model number is usually stamped on the underside of the cap skirt or on the mesh band. The most common units we see around Hagerstown are the Gelco single-flue caps with expanded metal mesh in the 3/4″ diamond pattern and the multi-flue versions with a flat or sloped hood. If the stamp is gone, we measure the flue tile outside dimensions and match from there.

One gotcha specific to Gelco: their single-flue caps use a slip-fit base with a pressure screw, not a clamp band. That works fine on square or rectangular clay tile, but if your flue has a slightly rounded tile or an uneven mortar crown, the base can sit proud and let water in at the corners. We shim and seal those corners every time. We also install quality aftermarket caps that match Gelco dimensions when the original line is discontinued or backordered. As an independent shop, we are not affiliated with Gelco; we simply install and service their products alongside brands like DuraFlex and HeatShield. What matters is the cap fits the flue and stays put.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Rust bleed or staining on the crown. Gelco caps are galvanized or painted steel, and once the coating gives out, rust runs down onto the crown and leaves orange streaks. It looks worse than it is, but it means the cap metal is thinning.
  • Loose cap movement. If you can see the cap shift from the ground on a windy day, the pressure screw or mounting flange has worked loose. One good gust through the alley off Jonathan Street, and that cap is in the neighbor’s yard.
  • Animal noise from the chimney. Squirrels and starlings only need a mesh hole the size of a quarter. The mesh fails before the hood does, and that’s usually the entry point.
  • Water in the firebox after rain. A cap with a cracked hood or worn seams lets water straight down the flue. In Hagerstown we get freeze-thaw cycles all winter, and that water does more damage than the cap ever will.
  • Mesh caving inward. The expanded metal on older Gelco caps can corrode and sag into the flue opening, which reduces draft and makes the fireplace smoke back into the room.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Hagerstown, a Gelco-compatible single-flue cap install typically runs $285 to $420. Multi-flue caps run higher, usually $450 to $640, because the cap itself costs more and the mounting often requires drilling into the crown. The range comes down to flue size, whether we need to repair the crown where the old cap sat, and whether you want stainless steel instead of galvanized. Stainless adds roughly 25 to 35 percent but lasts decades longer in Maryland weather.

Every quote includes the cap, the mounting hardware, sealing the base, and hauling the old cap away. You get the price before a tool comes off the truck. If it’s not done right, the 90-Day Done Right Promise means one call brings Wendell back at no charge. We also do a quick flue inspection while we’re up there, and if the cap is the only problem, that’s all you’ll hear about. If it does not need doing, we will tell you that first.

DIY or Call Us?

There are things an owner can safely check. Look at the cap from the ground with binoculars. Note rust, tilt, or gaps between the cap base and the crown. You can watch for water stains inside the firebox after a storm. What you should not do is climb a ladder to a second-story roofline and lean over the chimney to loosen a pressure screw. The fall risk is real, and a wobbling ladder on uneven ground is how people get hurt. We carry the right ladder, the fall protection, and the replacement hardware on the truck.

If you have already bought a Gelco cap and just need it installed, call us. We will look at the flue dimensions, confirm the cap matches, and mount it properly. If it doesn’t fit, we will tell you before we charge you a dime. Reach Wendell at (240) 534-1247 during the day, and a live person picks up around the clock.
