Signs Your HeatShield Crown Repair Is Failing
- Hairline cracks in the coating. This is the earliest sign. The polymer has lost flexibility, usually after several hard winters. Water is no longer being shed the way it should.
- Coating lifting at the edges. The bond between the HeatShield resin and the mortar crown underneath has broken. Water gets under the lift and works its way toward the flue.
- Chalking or fading color. UV exposure degrades the top layer over time. The product still sheds some water, but the protective thickness is thinning.
- Water staining on the ceiling near the chimney. By the time you see this, water has already traveled through the crown, down the flue exterior, and into the structure. The crown is the usual entry point.
- Efflorescence on the exterior brick. White mineral deposits near the top of the chimney mean water is moving through the masonry and leaving salt behind. The crown is the most common source.
